In the middle of the night (around 1 a.m., to be more specific) I was awakened by a tiny kitten voice crying. So I thought, “Oh, that’s nice, Indigo is having her kittens.” I wanted to make sure she was having them in a good spot, so I turned on the light to investigate. Indeed, she had found a wonderful spot, right at the foot of our bed, on top of our down comforter! So I got up and found the nesting box we had prepared for her, put it in a closet, and moved Indigo and her kitten to the box. Then I went to the bathroom to get a cloth to clean up the foot of our bed. When I came back, Indigo had moved her kitten OUT of the box. I could hear her in MY closet, so I knew I needed to investigate again. I didn’t have a flashlight, so I went downstairs on a flashlight hunt. I looked all around, and finally came back upstairs. Indigo was following me the whole time, meowing, and I could hear her kitten crying upstairs. I finally found the flashlight, so I went to investigate in my closet. She had put the kitten in a box of my maternity clothes! As you know, birth is a messy process, and I didn’t particularly want a pile of my clothes all dirty. So I got the nest box and moved it again, close to where the kitten was, and put the kitten in there. Indigo hopped in and seemed happy, so I closed the door to confine her to my closet. A few minutes later I peeked in, and the nest box was empty again. So again I had to hunt the kitten. Sure enough, Indigo had found ANOTHER box of maternity clothes and was in there. Back and forth we went, me offering nest ideas and Indigo rejecting them. FINALLY we compromised on the idea of her nest towel on top of my maternity clothes. Once she seemed to indicate she would stay there, I went back to bed. This morning I peeked in, and there are four creamy kittens nursing nicely. New life is so beautiful.
