Kids in the Kitchen

May 13th, 2006 by Christie

As I was sorting through the pile of paperwork and handouts that came along with our chicks, I noticed a brochure called “Kids in the Kitchen” put out by the American Egg Board. One of the recipes caught my eye, so I asked Luke if he wanted to put it together. He was so tickled to be able to make this recipe, and we thought it turned out quite yummy, so I wanted to share it with you here. The recipe was originally intended to be put together in separate custard cups, but we just used a bigger pan and adjusted the cooking time a bit. Here is how we did it.

Choco Yum Pudding
4 servings

2 slices bread
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 chocolate-flavored syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla

*Set the oven at 350 F.
*Tear each piece of bread into little pieces and put in your baking dish.
*Put the rest of the ingredients into a medium bowl. Beat with a fork until well mixed.
*Pour the wet mixture over the bread. Push the bread down so it gets wet.
*Let the pudding stand 5 minutes to soak up the liquid.
*Put the dish into the oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes. Once the pudding tests clean with a knife inserted in the middle, it’s done!

We let the pudding stand for a few minutes before serving.

After we tried the above recipe, I had some ideas for how to modify it. The next day I let Amelia make the recipe, but this time we doubled it and used chocolate chips instead of chocolate syrup. It was yummy that way too! I think it would also be good with raisins and cinnamon. We used whole-wheat bread, but you could use other kinds of bread, including raisin bread.

This recipe is especially easy for kids to do. Luke loved breaking up the bread, and he was so particular about making the pieces all about the same minute size. Amelia is much more like me, and she started to lose patience with the bread project, so her pieces gradually got bigger and bigger. I instructed her to go back and get some of those pieces broken up just a bit smaller. Both Luke and Amelia had such a great air of importance about them as they were working on their project and as their siblings were enjoying eating the fruits of their labor. I let both kids have the treat of cleaning out the dish after all the pudding had been served. Life doesn’t get much better than that!

Let me know if you try this recipe and what you think of it! Better yet, let your kids make the recipe and tell me how it went.
