Mother’s Day

May 15th, 2006 by Christie

Sunday was a special day for several reasons. Of course, it was Mother’s Day, so all the children were prompted by their father to give the appropriate greeting to their mother. But more importantly to them, it was Isaac’s birthday! Isaac’s request for his birthday “meal” was to go to Krispy Kreme, so that’s what we did. We almost had the place to ourselves, which was nice since we’re such a big group. We took photos, we sang, and Isaac got to pick out the whole dozen of assorted doughnuts for the family. He even got to pick a “chug” of chocolate milk to go along with his feast!

It’s hard to believe that my Isaac is 9 years old. Has it been that long since I gave birth to my ten-pound firstborn son? He’s getting tall and strong. It was my pleasure to share “Mother’s Day” with Isaac’s birthday. Rather fitting, don’t you think?

After we were done at the doughnut place, we headed over to my folks’ house. They have a family of robins nesting just outside the window on their front porch, and my goal was to photograph the babies before they get any bigger. The trick is not scaring the parent birds away while trying to grab their photo. Once the camera was in place I stood frozen for many minutes waiting for the bird to come back. Finally I was rewarded for my patience and the bird came to the nest to feed the babies.

Mother Robin

As I muse over the subjects of my photographs yesterday, I realize that they had everything to do with Mother’s Day. Not only did we celebrate a child’s birthday (made possible by a mother), but we saw an example in nature of an attentive mother.

Last night, after things started to settle down and after babies were in bed, I joined my mother, sister and brother at Baker’s Square to honor my mother and to remember her mother. Grandma Fox loved to bake pies, and she was good at it! She died nine years ago, but we still miss her and remember her life. My sister, Joyce, suggested we meet and have pie to remember Grandma and to honor our mother as well. We had a wonderful time visiting and laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

The evening ended with Isaac getting to go spend the night at Grandma’s house. He will grow up with wonderful memories of my mother, and I’m so grateful for that.

Happy Mother’s Day!
