Judah’s Day

October 15th, 2006 by Christie

Judah, 19 monthsLast Saturday was a busy day for a busy little boy. Judah, who is almost 19 months old, got to see and do lots of interesting things.

First thing in the morning he was abandoned by his mother and older brother who ran off to see the Farmer’s Market and to get a huge cinnamon roll at Kelly’s. When they came back (after visiting a flea market and a garage sale on the way home!) he was so relieved and delighted to see them. His mother came inside carrying an antique high chair, so he got to try it out right away. It fits his little self quite perfectly, and he sat in it quite happily.

Then, oddly enough, his mother bundled him up and loaded him into the van to go back out to that same garage sale where she’d gotten the high chair. Turns out the nice man who was visiting in the kitchen with Judah’s daddy was interested in the bright-red enamel-covered cast-iron sink that was for sale for five dollars. So Judah’s mama took most of the kids and headed back out the door to purchase the sink. That was a fun ride, and most of all Judah was grateful not to be left behind again.

Luke's pancakesWhen everyone came home, Judah’s mama mixed up some pancake batter for Luke to cook. Judah was so glad to get to eat pancakes for breakfast! The coolest thing happening in the kitchen was the pancakes, so Judah was a bit puzzled that his mama kept exclaiming over the water in the kitchen sink and the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Judah tried to get a good look in the dishwasher to see what the fuss was about, but he wasn’t allowed to inspect things properly before the door was shut again.

foundation work The rest of the morning passed rather uneventfully, with Judah being put down for his nap right as lunch was being prepared. Seems like the timing was a little off on that one, but Judah was too tired to complain. He napped as quickly as possible and then hurried back downstairs just as lunch was being finished up. Judah's CheetosHe got some baked beans and a bit of hamburger, but he was most interested in the bag of Cheetos that was just out of reach. When Judah was finally able to escape from that troublesome high chair, he fetched the bag of Cheetos off the table and claimed it as his own. He carried them around and munched contentedly, occasionally screaming to ward off intruders who tried to grab handfuls from the bag.

Judah enjoyed walking around outside most of the day. He got to bounce on the trampoline with Isaac. He got to help Mama work on fixing a cabinet in the front yard. He was able to drop walnuts into Mama’s wash water in the front yard. He got to watch his Daddy and that nice man (Mr. Ross) work on the foundation of the house. And he was quite tickled to find some hard rolls laying around in the front yard. Why they were laying on the ground was a mystery, because they were only slightly burned. beer & breadProbably Mama had thrown them out for the birds and squirrels (after burning them on the grill), but Judah felt they were worth salvaging, so he grabbed one or two to round out his lunch. Wandering around the yard on a brisk autumn morning is most invigorating, but it does require additional sustenance that didn’t seem to be forthcoming from any other source. Just getting a drink of water on Saturday was a challenge! Poor Judah had to try to communicate with the rather thick-headed big people who were responsible for him. He said, “Thirsty” quite clearly, but the hearing-impaired caregivers were convinced he said, “Dirty”, so he had to submit to a pants inspection before anyone finally got a clue and offered him a drink of water.

the last dropRight about supper time Judah noticed his daddy and that nice man heading inside, so he followed them. Turns out they were done with their project outside and they sat down to drink a beer and visit for a little bit. Judah thought their work on the house foundation looked alright, but he was convinced that if he could have helped a bit more it probably would have more character. Judah got settled on the couch next to his daddy and waited until just the right moment. Sure enough, he got to hold the empty beer bottle! Yummy, yummy, yummy!!!

Can you believe that Judah’s mom had the nerve to leave him again??? Well, she did. She took Luke and they ran off to shop for who-knows-what. Before they left they loaded up the van with lots of left-over building supplies and a huge handful of receipts. Most likely all that stuff was going to go back to the store.

Daddy mixed up a very yummy supper with leftover hamburgers and chopped onions and grated cheese. Judah thought it was quite good, but he was getting so tired. Fortunately before too long Daddy agreed that it was time for bed. Once Judah’s jammies were on, he marched straight to his bed, laid down, and fell asleep before anyone else could even get to their beds. Normally Judah likes to play that little game where he gets out of bed and finds the person who told him to “lay down and go to sleep.” It’s kind of like “Hide and Seek”, but no one else thinks it’s nearly as much fun as he does. There will always be more chances to play that game.

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about Judah’s day.
