Rescue!

April 4th, 2007 by Christie

Dear Faithful Reader,

While it often astounds me that folks are interested in my daily life, I must admit that it does give me great pleasure to have this outlet for all of the little bits of news that rattle around in my head. So here I am, once again, to share with you an update on the most mundane of subjects: the weather.

Last night we were warned that the temps would dip quite low, so I rescued some of the tulips that I felt were the most fragile. This morning I was surprised to see outside that it had indeed frozen so severely that the tulips left outside were bent over and quite dead-looking. I felt sick. If I had known that it would freeze THAT hard, I would have rescued many more tulips. After giving it some thought, I decided to bring just a few tulips in and set them in a vase to see what sort of recovery they would make. The stems were soooo cold and quite frozen. I had little hope of the tulips doing anything more than thawing and limply drooping over the edge of the jar.

Much to my amazement, the flowers slowly came back to life. As soon as I saw that they were willing to respond to the warmer temperatures indoors, I hurried outside with my shears and cut every single tulip bud that I could find. They were so cold, and there were so many of them that I had to make three different trips indoors to warm up and to find another jar to display my frozen treasures.

If I’ve counted right, I now have eight jars and containers of all sizes and shapes holding beautiful tulips. They are on the dining table and they are by the kitchen sink. Everywhere I look there is another bunch of cheerful, grateful tulip faces smiling at me and looking very content.

Tonight is another very cold night, and Laura has covered the snapdragon in her flower pot for the second time. I hope it survives, but if it doesn’t, we’ll just have another excuse to walk through the garden section at Lowe’s again.

In other news…

Judah is doing great with his potty training. I continue to be amazed at his transformation. How can a person change so much after just one morning of instruction?

And so ends another daily update from the humble journal of…

Yours truly,

Christie

Oh Christie! Tulips are my absolute favorite!! Last fall I finally got a chance to plant some bulbs in our new yard- it was the first time we’ve owned our own home where we could dig AND we were staying long enough to see the “fruit” of our labors. I am really enjoying my tulips as they pop up all around my yard. I would not have known how to save them from a freeze though! I may have to use your idea when that cold snap gets over here to the east coast.

    Christie,
I am one of those people of which you are astounded….i love reading your blog! I am so glad you are enjoying your tulips even though you didn’t anticipate having them in the house. It must be wonderful to look around and see evidences of our Creator in every room! And what a great thing it is to have Judah doing so well! How long has it been since you didn’t have a little one in diapers? Hmmm…with the money you usually spend on diapers you could sure get a lot of beautiful beads!!! :)
