Words of encouragement for homeschool moms

Surprise

September 21st, 2007 by Christie

Michael came home over lunch to pick us up and take the whole gang of us to the dentist. I dread these dentist visits because I usually get lectured about my children’s poor brushing habits. It’s one of those things that I intend to do better at reminding kids about, but it just doesn’t happen at all like it should.

Amazingly, despite my trepidation, the dentist visit went very well, and we escaped with only one kid needing a filling.

We stopped at the house on Monroe to pick up a few things, including the things Michael needs to examine my Grandmother’s car that is mysteriously leaking brake fluid, and we headed home.

When we walked in the door, we were greeted by a flood in the kitchen. The water filter under the sink had lost its hose, and there was water all over the kitchen floor. It was an inch or more deep in some places, and still working its way across to the other side of the kitchen. After standing in shock for a moment, I tried to spring into action, but my attempts at collecting the water failed and only managed to frustrate Michael. Finally Michael thought of using the shop vac, so Isaac raced to get it from the garage.

Michael has spent a good deal of time now trying to get all the water out of the kitchen. He filled the large shop vac container several times in the process. Then he had to pry off some of the kickboards under the cabinets since water was behind there and actually piled up waiting to come out. The kickboards were wet, so they did not come off in one piece, which added to the frustration.

On top of all that, water is now leaking into the basement. It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely leaking. I’m hoping everything will dry out and won’t need tons of repair work, but Michael fears the worst and is imagining having to replace lots of drywall and ceiling.

He was supposed to be heading out to our church men’s retreat this afternoon, but I haven’t had the nerve to ask him if he’s still going. Quite frankly, I hope he goes. Once he gets things under control here, there’s no reason for him to stay home, and in fact, I think getting away would do him good.

This is two days in a row of rather stressful events. What is going to happen next?
