Words of encouragement for homeschool moms

Kirby

September 3rd, 2008 by Christie

The past few weeks have flown by. So many things happening every day. Through it all, one little creature has been a constant. Isaac is keeping a toad on the front porch in a bin of dirt. He named it Kirby. We catch tiny crickets for it to eat. Kirby hides from us every chance he/she gets by burrowing down in the dirt backwards. But interestingly, Kirby doesn’t mind sitting on Isaac’s hands for social time. Perhaps that’s because Isaac’s hands are just about as dirty as Kirby’s natural habitat

Isaac says with pride, “This is the first thing I’ve been allowed to keep that I’ve found!” Maybe I’ll let him keep a snake next summer. A toad is perfect for now. Then again, if I let him keep a snake now, it can eat the toad, and then he’ll have two pets in one!

P.S.  Isaac read this and asked me to post a correction.

Kirby is not an “it”.

Kirby is not a “he/she”.

Kirby is a girl toad.

Now you know (and so do I).

    Fantastic photos!
    And a great write-up.
    You deserve a trophy!
I wish Isaac great success with his special treasure :-)

  2. crissy Says:

Every spring as I am digging in my flower beds, I wake up toads that have slept there all winter. Maybe if you have enough dirt his pet will stay around!

  3. Alicia Says:

Good luck with your pet, Isaac. What a wonderful thing to experience!

    Isaac,

I am amazed at your curiosity and patience with such creatures.

I look forward to meeting Kirby!

Christy, The first thing Donny kept that he found was a water snake. He found it in your Aunt Pat’s creek area. We kept it in a tank with water, thinking it should be wet. It needed to be able to dry out and it died. I felt so bad that I let him buy a six foot long King snake. For many years this was a treasured pet in our house.
The downside was that it ate live mice. Donny sold it eventually, but he enjoyed it a lot. It had good shock value for his friends too, which boys love. Your stories on here about Isaac remind me of Donny.
