Kids
Usually I don’t have a clue about what the public schools are doing. But this school year is different. Every day that the public schools are off on holiday, at least one neighbor girl comes over for the day. Sometimes we have two extra kids. Today is one of these days. Thing is, I didn’t know it was a school holiday, so I planned school work for our kids. And I’m just obstinate enough to insist that my kids do school even with neighbor kids here.
Thing is, I’m not really much of a “kid person”. I’ve never been drawn to children, and didn’t really want kids of my own. God has been working on my heart ever since my college days, and showing me His plan for my life, which these days includes a LOT of kids! The more children I have, and the more neighbor kids who show up, the more I have grown to enjoy children…most of the time. Today my level of enjoyment is wearing a bit thin. There have been a few squabbles, the baby has insisted on finding mischief, and it seems like someone is always hungry. And a few times I have looked around and thought, “What am I doing here?????” It just doesn’t seem like I fit in this picture.
Alas, I am not able to embelish on these thoughts further. Lilly is scattering her granola as widely as possible from her high chair. Hot dogs are simmering on the stove. And I’m being interrupted on an average of once every 0.8 seconds. Gotta run!

I nearly laughed out loud when you said you weren’t a kid person!! I think of you and immediately think of a Godly woman and mother who nurtures and teaches her children well. I guess you’re right when you said He has changed your heart, because you are certainly (from my viewpoint) doing a fabulous job and I think your kids are delightful. But… I do see how alot of kiddos running around and messing up your school schedule could be annoying!
Just think… in 20 years… you will miss these days! Savor the craziness and chaos for one day you and Mr. Lyons will be sitting at home wishing you had screaming children running around!

Molly, thank you for your kind words. I suppose someday we’ll miss these days. Perhaps when those longings hit, we can borrow our grandchildren for a few days and give our kids a break.

Take it from a woman who now only has 2 cats to keep her company – you WILL miss these times. Rick is gone more often than here and when he is here, then I am on the road. I miss the craziness of “children talk” and miss being needed. Now I have to beg my “cat children” to let me talk to them! Thank goodness I have a few friends that will loan me their grandchildren when I really need them!

Christy, Don’t depend on missing these times in only 20 years. You will still have a bunch of kids at home and a few drop off grandkids when you are in your fifties.
I babysat for a weekend at Kays and the house was full of kids most of the time, most of which I had no clue as to where they belonged. One even came over to practice the piano.
I am not a very neat person, so I thrived on chaos during my kid raising years and I still enjoy babysitting for a whole bunch of the grandkids at the same time.
You are always in the midst of a throng of children. for not being a kid person you do a very good job at being happy with your bunch. I love you. Aunt Carol
