Foundling
Last Wednesday, on our way to a piano performance for the three pianists in our family, Laura spotted a nest of drowned bunnies. Six of them were definitely dead, but one seemed to have a few signs of life. I thought Laura should just put it back and let it finish dying, but Laura insisted she could not do that, since it was alive! So I dug in my pocket, found two old tissues, wrapped up the tiny bunny (probably only about 2-3 days old), and stuck him in the pocket of my hoodie. We hurried on in to the building, and I told Laura to go wash her hands before her piano event.
During the time we were there, while Laura, Luke and Amelia played their pieces for the judge, the bunny warmed up and started being a little more wiggly. Throughout the whole time, we took turns holding our little friend, doing our best to warm him up. I was amazed at how much better he seemed after only an hour or two.
Once we got home, I searched online for information about rehabilitating wild rabbits. Turns out, there’s almost a 100% mortality rate for rehabbing bunnies. I guess the best way to raise a baby rabbit is to be a mama rabbit. But a few folks did have some information for how to feed bunnies and what to do if we were to insist upon trying to save this bunny’s life.
I hurried to the store and purchased the necessary ingredients, mixed up some baby-bunny formula, and we started to feed the little critter with a tiny syringe leftover from some bird medication.
Amazingly, four days later, this bunny is still alive. I warn Laura every day that the bunny will probably die, so she needs to realize we’re just doing our best, and to prepare for the worst. But in spite of my dire warnings, we can’t help but think our little bunny is just about the cutest thing we’ve seen. His tiny ears, tiny paws and his tiny cottontail is simply adorable. His eyes are starting to peek open now, so I’m guessing he’s going to be even more adorable when he can look at us. When he does die, it will be sad indeed, but I will still be glad that we got to interact with one of God’s amazing creatures, even if just for a short time.
