Bunny Update

May 18th, 2009 by Christie

This morning when we woke up and checked on the bunny, he was not doing well at all. Yesterday he seemed fine, but today he was dying. Laura tried to see if he needed to be rehydrated, but nothing worked. So we wrapped him gently and put him in a warm place to rest.
The little guy died a while later. He was so small. I was sorry he died. I was hoping he’d live long enough for us to enjoy a little longer. But at least he died peacefully, and we had four and a half days with him.

I’m sorry to hear this news.
I was hoping you could defy the odds and see this little bunny live.
I’m glad you got pictures of him.
Thank you for sharing your experience.

    Hi Christie,

I just got back from vacation yesterday, and was catching up on your blog. About 10 years ago we found a nest of abandoned bunnies in our yard. We watched them for quite a few days and when we realized that the mother wasn’t coming back, we took them inside. The bunnies started dying off one by one, and we decided to ask for professional advice. We were told that wild bunnies cannot be touched by human hands. It’s fatal for them, when they are young. I forget the reason he gave, why. I always thought that if we were ever to find more bunnies that we would watch them carefully, and leave them be. Another thing we learned was that after a couple weeks the mother rabbit abandons her young and leaves them in their little warm burrough lined with her fur, that they were born in, until they are big enough to hop out on their own. We sure learned a lot from our wild bunny experience. It might be a good learning experience for your kids to look up on the internet how bunnies grow, and why they die from human contact.
